Paint & furniture – Main bedroom update
It’s week 3 of our One Room Challenge and true to form I’m beginning to feel the stress. Every time we decide to tackle a room makeover, Kes and I come up with these huge ideas & plans for multiple DIYs. Week 3 is usually about the time when I take a look back at the long list of to-dos that we have yet to complete and start to seriously doubt our ability to pull it all together in time. This time around is no exception.
If you missed the last two weeks’ updates you can get caught up here:
We’re at the half way point of this crazy 6 week challenge and the list is beginning to look mighty long…
Purchase new bed
- Finish disassembling pallets
- Clean & stain reclaimed pallet wood
- Empty bedroom of existing furniture
Paint bedroom walls
- Paint doors & trim
Attempt to have carpets cleaned
- Rip out carpet & install hardwood (still deciding)
- Install pallet feature wall
- Install sconces
- Build nightstands
- Assemble new bedroom furniture
- Mount tv
- Style & accessorize room
I know what you’re thinking – not a whole lot of progress from last week right? Well, if I’m being totally honest, last weeks’ setbacks really took the wind out of my sails. I’m still not over having to cancel the bed I wanted. Sure, we did find another one in a very similar style that will do, but you know when you just have your heart set on something?? Sigh…
We ended up ordering this one from Structube.
It is very similar to the other bed, but the colour is a little lighter & the most obvious detail it’s missing is the tufting – which I really loved. Anyhow, our new bed is scheduled to arrive this weekend so hopefully, once we get it in the space I’ll feel better about it. I’m actually thinking about buying some new bedding and pillows since I haven’t bought any for a while now. It’s time for a change! A friend of mine recently bought some gorgeous Mulberry Silk Bedding and I’m quite tempted to get some too. As long as it all matches the room decor I don’t mind which bedding I get to be honest!
As for the carpet debacle, we did manage to clean the stain. Well, kind of… The discoloration in the carpet is gone, but if you get down on the floor, the ever so faint smell still lingers. We’re still on the fence on whether or not we can live with it. We’re thinking about looking at these services for Rug Cleaning Melbourne Eastern Suburbs and other locations have available. Perhaps they might be able to meticulously clean the stain and remove the smell! Having hardwood in the bedroom is something we both wanted originally, but we just aren’t sure we can justify the extra cost right now. Especially because installing the wood means we’d likely also want to get an area rug. See how quickly it adds up?? I’m trying to think of it as an investment rather than an expense, but our bank account is a bit harder to convince. Lol! Saying that, I suppose we can get our fix for wood by using wooden bedside tables until we can afford the hardwood, So, hopefully, the bedroom will look great until our bank accounts warrant more wood!
The pallet wall is also coming along much slower than I’d hoped. I have to say that I vastly underestimated how much work it would be to take apart that many pallets.
Even using a saw to cut through the nails, it’s taken much longer than I thought it would. And the April showers we’ve been having have not been very conducive to being able to power wash the boards & let them sit in the sun to dry out. Hopefully, this weekend’s forecast holds up so we can finally make some headway with that.
This week hasn’t been all doom and gloom though. By using the assistance of companies like Lenny Martin Painting, we did manage to get the walls painted and I’m SO in love with the colour!
We chose PARA Paints Sterling Spoon (PF71) and it’s really the most beautiful soft grey. Our room gets a lot of natural light, which I love but which makes choosing paint colors a little bit difficult. Paint swatches never look the same in the room as they do under the fluorescent lights of the store and the color difference from morning to evening or even sunny day to cloudy is astronomical. I’m happy to say though, that this color looks amazing in every light! It’s soft & cool, and we love it!
We also spent some time this week looking at inspiration for the DIY nightstands we’re going to be building. We want them to have a mid-century feel so we’re thinking about incorporating elements from each of these:
And how cute is this little love seat we ordered?! It’s going to be the centrepiece of the sitting area we’ll be creating in the corner of the room opposite the tv wall.
So there you have it. Not a whole lot of actual progress this week, but at least we’ve got the big ticket items ordered and on their way. Hopefully the pace will pick up from here on in. Oh – and make sure you set aside some time this week to check out all of the other participants of the One Room Challenge. There are some seriously talented bloggers making over some incredible spaces. You won’t want to miss any of it.
